London’s Chelsea Flower Show

The Royal Horticultural Society’s annual Chelsea Flower Show is famous all over the world, and if you are lucky enough to be in London, May 19 – 23, 2009, you may be able to attend some of it.

English gardeners’ expertise is world-renowned. Apart from the kaleidoscope of color, you’ll sense a myriad of fragrances and textures as well. All is a delight! You’ll likely enjoy seeing the beautiful displays even if you’re not a gardener.

If you do garden, then you’ll think you’ve found Plant Heaven — seeing cutting-edge garden designs, products and learning new techniques.

This is the quintessential English gardening affair, and it will be crowded, and likely well-managed. The suggestion is to come on public transportation if at all possible.

You’ll even be able to treat yourself to a trip on the River Thames to reach Chelsea, just for this special week, via the Thames Executive Charter boats – use link above.

Handicapped plans are in place, so if you need them, check the link above, too, even if you are coming by private car to the general area. One family companion is also admitted free with each wheelchair visitor. Reservations for a loaner wheelchair have already closed for this year’s show.

Travel with as little extra “stuff” as possible, as there is only a small cloakroom and RHS is not responsible for your items. Make sure you have a light raincoat or plastic poncho in case of rain; they don’t want you to use umbrellas in a crowd.

The show opens at 8am and lasts until 8pm except Saturday, when it closes at 5:30pm. Organizers say to come early. To help you plan your visit, there is a map in the $7.50 catalog (£5).

You can pre-book a table for lunch in the Rock Bank Restaurant. They will have a full three-course lunch. To pre-book a table call 0845 260 7000 or plan to use a take-out option from 11:30am – 2:30pm. There is also a catering area by Creek Gate.

The Show has many aspects to gardening, including an urban challenge, which many visitors can relate to and use to solve their problems at home.

For a short time after the show, each year you can see the winning designs at: The Royal Horticultural Society site

The precepts of gardening are universal, and the experts here can add to your new knowledge. Attending the Show is time well-spent by making a new connection with the natural world while increasing your life-skills and meeting like-minded people.
