Washington DC – Outdoor Recreation Nearby

Those with a little money have also started vineyards, making the Hunt Country one of two centers of Virginia’s growing wine industry, as you already have seen in prior articles.

If you avoid getting tipsy in the tasting rooms, it’s easy to wind your way through the farms and hamlets to Manassas, where the North and the South fought two major Civil War battles on the banks of Bull Run, including that conflict’s first great contest.

You will be following in the wake of Col. John Singleton Mosby, the famous Confederate raider, who made Hunt Country life miserable for the Yankees during the Civil War. Read the 2 articles I’ve written about him. See the archive link below.

CYCLING

When you are checking-out the Visitor Center in Leesburg, be aware of the nearby portion of the 45-mile Washington & Old Dominion Railroad (W&OD) Trail which brings bicyclists from all over the mid-Atlantic region. The W&OD Trail follows an old railroad bed through the heart of the area, crossing South King Street in Leesburg. More information below.

PARKS AND PLANTATIONS

And, there are plenty of county parks, public and private plantations to get you out in the beautiful Virginia countryside, too.

Do a search on any which appeal to you:
___ Ball’s Bluff Regional Park
___ Dodona Manor, General George C. Marshall’s home
___ Manassas National Battlefield Park
___ Morven Park – 1,200 acre plantation and equestrian center
___ Oatlands Plantation – an 1804 mansion – four season delight, with 200 years of history
___ Sully Historic Site in Chantilly, VA.

GOLF

Golfers can tee off at the excellent links designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.- and Greg Norman at Lansdowne Resort – a destination manor, restaurant, hotel and links all-in-one. Lansdowne is about 15 minutes from Dulles Airport, in amazingly beautiful countryside; it’s about 60 minutes from the Capitol Building in downtown Washington, DC.

When near Leesburg, head over to the Gary Player designed the course at Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, 3 miles north of Leesburg on U.S. 15. More information below.

Less expensive Golf Courses are at Goose Creek Golf Club, in Leesburg, and the municipal Brambleton Regional Park Golf Course in nearby Ashburn, VA.
