Washington to Baltimore – Jewish-style Deli

If you are going on a day trip to Baltimore from Washington DC, and you need kosher food, then you could stop at this 3 generation family-owned Jewish-style deli near Baltimore Harbor.

Unfortunately, I have to say “Jewish-style” because even though all their meats are kosher, they are still willing to disobey Kosher laws by mixing milk and meat e.g. cheese on a meat sandwich. And, they are open on the Sabbath.

But, it’s far better than no options, so ask for unopened packages etc. if you are ultra-orthodox or stay with the parve foods. Orthodox Muslims may be able to eat here too. Otherwise, find a fish restaurant, or a vegetarian one, if Attman’s doesn’t qualify as kosher enough for you!

They are named Baltimore’s Best Deli, and are so close to the harbor, that a picnic is possible, if the weather is nice. Attman’s has very good corned beef and pastrami, good shaved turkey and brisket, very good pickles and knishes, as well as good matzo ball soup. They know how to put together a decent, reasonably priced sandwich ($6 to $12 dollars for most). Some might consider the rye bread is a bit weak and their desserts are just ordinary.

The street they are located used to be filled with Jewish merchants when the store opened in 1915. You can see who’s there today!
