Washington Metro – Jewish-style Delis 4

This time we’re visiting Uptown Deli, in Bethesda, Maryland. It’s a Jewish-style deli which means that it’s NOT strictly kosher. No deli which has ham, bacon etc., and also dairy along with meat could ever be kosher. But, each has kosher products available, so for orthodox Jews, even these places could supply you with picnic fare if it came in the original wrappers, unopened. For Halal food, many of these products would qualify, as for Orthodox Jews.

If your hotel room has a refrigerator, then if you bring small insulated bags in your luggage, then you can consider picnics. The ice tray in a small refrigerator may not be enough to supply enough to keep it cold until noon, especially in summer, but if you have several empty plastic bags, then use the ice machine to supply all you need to keep your picnic fare cold.

I remember one delightful picnic out in a little garden at the side of the main Smithsonian Building, and especially on the Mall, there are so many places to enjoy an outdoor meal 3 seasons of the year. Plan for it. The Smithsonian museums also have certain buildings which have cafeterias and a member’s dining room.

However, I encourage you to leave Washington’s core, and see the neighborhoods and surrounding countryside and if heading to Bethesda, where the famous medical center is, then consider this deli, to eat in or take-out.

As I said before, this one is called Uptown Deli.

Their matzoh ball soup is quite good.

The Half and Half (a small soup and half an “ESS a Sandwich”) for about $7 is an awesome deal; it also includes a side of coleslaw and a pickle. Now, the pickle is straight out of a classic deli in New York!

The knish and also the chicken salad sandwich are well done. I think that you’ll enjoy any pastrami-based sandwich here, too.

Be sure to try the macaroons which are soft and creamy on your palate.

The service is quick and friendly.

And Uptown Deli in Bethesda will be a 5 minute walk from the Bethesda station.
