Washington DC – Breakfast With Kids 5

I am so excited to tell you about the following family restaurants which are in about 50% of America’s states, because for 20 years I lived about 15 minutes away from where it all started, and our family still goes there, for about a total of 30 years patronage.

Washington DC area is lucky to have 3 of the Original Pancake Restaurants, which started in Portland, Oregon in 1953, founded by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke.

Enjoy their extensive menu of delicious authentic national and ethnic pancake recipes. There are even Gluten-Free pancakes, too, if you are gluten intolerant. They also serve crepes, waffles, french toast and egg dishes. More about our favorites below.

We began going in 1981 and we loved it so much that every overseas visitor we have comes there with us, and breakfast for family birthdays is often there, too. I’m looking forward to a new round with my little grandchild, now!

In DC, the better regarded outlet is the Bethesda one. The Rockville one is weaker, and the Falls Church one gets good marks. So, if you are staying anywhere nearby, I recommend you give these a whirl!

These Original Pancake House restaurants are SO much better than having pancakes anywhere else in other chains, like IHOP, Denny’s etc. These pancakes and this business has been a 3 generation labor-of-love and accomplishment.

I think the best things are the Dutch Baby and the huge Apple Pancake. But, if you don’t have a big appetite (and are willing to share) or if you want to share with small kids, then this is still perfect choice for you. The Dutch Baby is way less messy. The dollar pancakes are also great for children.

Watch for more as you travel as there are over 100 Original Pancake House restaurants from coast to coast, many of which have won local and national acclaim.

Decades ago, Portland’s legendary celebrity-chef, one of the first global culinary celebrities, James Beard, was one of the Original Pancake House’s biggest fans!

The 3 Original Pancake House locations in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, have free parking. Each location offers free wi-fi and a senior menu on weekdays.

If you have a family member who’s not into pancakes, then there are also sandwiches, burgers, salads and wraps from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Signature Dishes — both of these take 20 – 30 minutes to prepare!

The signature dishes include an Apple Pancake, which is a single huge pancake smothered with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar. It’s baked to perfection, creating a deliciously rich cinnamon sugar glaze.

But, my absolute, hands-down favorite is the “other” signature item known as the Dutch Baby. It’s bigger than a dinner plate and is an air filled delight. Oven baked to golden perfection, it is served with lemon (ask for extra wedges), whipped butter and powdered sugar (ask to put it on yourself) to create a mouthwatering, memorable experience.

It’s not unusual for every member in our party to order a Dutch Baby; we love these eggy jewels that much. It’s baked in an iron skillet, in the oven, like a big pop-over. It has a delicious crispness around the top edges but is moist on the low part against the plate.

Anything made with their own recipe sourdough starter is definitely worth trying, and my father used to love the classic buckwheat stack!

If you are not into big portions, ask if you can order a half-stack portion.
