Washington, DC – Holiday Celebrations

This is the last night of Hanukkah, and the whole menorah is ablaze with light, in windows of Jewish homes and in front of The White House, we remember the first battle for religious freedom, which Jews fought 2,200 years ago!

The last candle on the National Menorah will be lit on the Presidential Ellipse at 4pm.

If you are in Washington and have a microwave in your hotel room, and have not been able to find anywhere to have latkes, potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce, the “traditional” Hanukkah food (for the past 500 years), then here’s a solution!

Cork Market celebrates the Festival of Lights with an innovative Hanukkah carry-out menu and a latkes and sparkling wine tasting!

Ask the staff at Cork to make sure the sour cream and applesauce are in separate containers that can be removed when you microwave the latkes to reheat them — so make sure the container for the latkes is microwaveable, too! Ask them to include some microwave paper towel so that covers the latkes and absorbs some of the steam, helping them from becoming soggy.

This is last choice, if you have a kosher restaurant near your hotel (or ask the chef in your hotel) so that you can immediately eat latkes after they are made, that’s always better! You’ll be surprised that an excellent hotel’s dining room can be very accommodating. It’s worth a try, as being away from home at the holidays, especially if it’s for business, is hard, and missing the foods is too.

Call your loved ones or speak to and see them via computer. This electronically-connected world goes a long way towards helping family and friends stay connected, no matter where you are in the world.
