San Francisco – Everyday Insider! (TM)

Continuing with a list of Everyday Insider! (TM) events or venues which tourists to San Francisco can use to enjoy California life with the locals. See more of the series at links below.

Check the days of the week and other pertinent details, as well as a map to try to make an itinerary which makes sense. Once you leave the City of San Francisco, driving distances and times can be considerable, so it makes sense to put a plan in place.

___ Napa Valley Wine Train:
This is a beautiful part of the California Wine Country, and especially St. Helena is very walkable, if you get the chance.

___ Golden Gate Fields – Horse Racing in Berkeley:
1100 Eastshore Hwy, Berkeley, CA 94710

Sundays are Dollar Days meaning admission, parking, hot dogs and warm cups of cheap beer are one buck each; betting and the amounts on the races, however, is your choice.

It is the last of the Bay Area racetracks, Golden Gate does not have a year-round racing schedule. The two other beautiful SF racetracks were transformed. Locals fought the good fight, but lost – Tanforan has been demolished for a shopping mall, for decades, and Bay Meadows lost in 2008. It is now being made into a huge green-architecture housing development, still called “Bay Meadows”, on the Peninsula, in San Mateo.

Most horses which run at Golden Gate are not exactly Triple Crown contenders, but you will still have a pleasant afternoon, if you like racing.

The views from Golden Gate Fields are breath-taking, maybe the best in the entire Bay Area. I kid you not. From the parking lot you can see the entire Bay: both bridges, San Francisco’s skyline, Marin’s hills, and more. It is a hidden gem that anyone can appreciate.

___ The Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory is in San Leandro, just South of Berkeley and Oakland and part of a day trip which could include either Golden Gate Fields OR on the way to Ardenwood Historic Farm, in Part 1 (link below).

Ghiradelli has a small retail factory store in San Leandro, across the Bay, that sells their various products at a significant savings.

In San Francisco, you can also visit their flagship store and Ghiradelli’s Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop at the original Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory near the Fisherman’s Wharf. It is now called “Ghiradelli Square” and you’ll enjoy its 1850’s architecture and the hip stores and cafes there!

The present factory’s store is at:
1111 139th Ave. (Between E. 14th & Washington Ave)
San Leandro, CA 94578
Sorry, no tours of the factory are offered.
