Seattle – Music Events!

Seattle is filled with the sound of music! With such a multicultural community, the City is a mecca for all kinds of auditory treats.

The first Seattle music event concert is from world-class Indonesian gamelan master Rahayu Supanggah and Gamelan Pacifica. The Gamelan is the traditional music of the Indonesian archipeligo and I heard it played in Bali and in Jogjakarta on Java, during traditional Indonesian dance performances.

It is mostly a delicate sound, with lots of tinkling and gentle, breezy nuance and a clash of symbols once in a while, for drama, if needed. The pace of the music also adds drama, and it’s amazing how fast some of these traditional instruments can be played.

As an introduction to a very pleasing form of Asian music, which uses a different set of scales, this would be perfect. At this Cornish College of the Arts performance, Rahayu Supanggah, who is one of Indonesia’s preeminent composers, curates a concert of contemporary gamelan compositions by various Indonesian composers.
