London – Xmas Markets 2

The second recent addition to the London Xmas Market roster for holiday shopping is the Cologne Christmas Market on the south bank of the River Thames. It’s at the Southbank Centre on Belvedere Road, between the Waterloo and Jubilee bridges.

Again, for some mysterious reason, this is another “German” themed fair.

German chalet-style stalls are set up, running along the riverside stretching from the London Eye to the Royal Festival Hall. Strolling this section of the Southbank at any time of year is one of the best free things you can do in London but with this pretty market lining the pedestrian promenade, you are in for a real treat.

There are about 60 traditional German market wooden chalets with vendors selling all kinds of gifts, food and hand-crafted items — from wooden toys to glass Christmas tree ornaments.

The food is German themed too. You can sip a warming glühwein (German mulled wine), enjoy a famous German Bratwurst or try a gingerbread heart cookieInto The Hoods, ZooNation.

The market is just a portion of the Southbank Centre’s Christmas Unwrapped programme which also includes performances of Sandi Toksvig’s Christmas Cracker with Pamela Anderson, Peter & the Wolf and ZooNation’s award-winning dance show, Into the Hoods.

You can combine a trip to this Xmas market with visits to the London Eye, Royal National Theatre, IMAX, or the skating rink at Somerset House, directly across the river.
