Seattle – Top Sights

Visiting the Emerald City is a special experience and there’s a wide variety of ethnic, historic and cultural choices for residents and visitors. This post will start to inform you about some of Seattle’s best tourist sights.

It’s important to also know that, as in many world-class cities, there is a program where visitors can save on admission prices to local attractions. In this case, the card saves about 37% and it is called the Go Seattle Card. It is available for several different lengths of stay and about 35 attractions participate. Cards are available for adult and child admissions, but there appears not to be a “family package”.

Some of my favorite attractions in Seattle are:

  • The Space Needle – the icon of the city which was built when Seattle hosted the World’s Fair. From its unparalleled vantage point, you will get amazing views of Mount Rainier (Tahoma, is the Native American name), Puget Sound and its necklace of islands and the metro area with lakes and parks and more.
  • The (Boeing) Museum of Flight — only this aircraft company could put together such an amazing private collection. The Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC can top it (and of course, they have an insider’s chance to grab the publicly-funded specimens), but I have no hesitation to recommend this fabulous aviation collection which is housed at equally famous Boeing Field.
  • The Seattle Art Museum is a very modern glass and metal building not far from Seattle’s Puget Sound’s shore. Presently, it is highlighting 12 of Michelangelo’s sketches. As the artist regularly burned his sketches, it is a treasure to find that 12 of them were “missed”. I have always found their permanent and visiting exhibitions well done. The Australian Aboriginal Gallery at SAM is excellent and it is the only museum in the US to have such a collection. I have enjoyed their Native American collection, too.
  • Seattle’s generally mild weather makes it possible to consider a winter vacation, there, and be sure to visit Seattle as part of a trip to the Winter Olympic Games Vancouver 2010.
