International Drivers Permit

Governments are increasingly concerned about the large number of vehicle accidents which involve tourists. Several International Treaties have been signed with rules for the signatory nations to adhere to. One of these is the necessity for an International Driver’s Permit (IDP).

These are only issued by designated authorities. Do not just “buy” one off the internet. See which groups are authorized to issue them in your country. In the United States, the US State Department has only authorized the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance.

You may apply for your international drivers license at AAA, online, if you are an American, over 18 years old and then follow the procedure and payment. It will take 4 – 6 weeks to receive your Identification permit. At the site, you will find the list of countries which honor the IDP. The permits cannot be issued more than 6 months in advance of your departure.

Regardless of your citizenship. you must carry your own country’s driver’s license with you, at all times, in addition to your IDP and passport.

Please be aware that being a pedestrian or cyclist overseas requires new awareness too, as does making sure that you are only traveling in vehicles of licensed, approved operators.
